What is a Certificate of Deposit? Certificates of Deposits, or "CDs" as they are most often referred to, are a great savings vehicle. They offer a low risk way (versus say the uninsured stock market) to earn interest on your money over a specified period of time. CDs offer a variety of terms, which means the length of time before you can take out the money and the interest that has grown with the initial deposit. Once you select the length of time for your CD to mature, you receive dividends (which are interest on your money) that is paid out at the end of the term with your initial CD money. At that point you can choose to cash out all of your money and interest, renew or open another Certificate of Deposit, or place part or the entire balance into another type of account with Washtenaw Federal Credit Union. It's really up to you! Please be aware that because the interest rate is higher on CDs and the term is a commitment, there is a penalty for withdrawing the money before the term is complete. If you have money that is ready to focus on savings, a Certificate of Deposit might be the best option for you.
