It’s That “Tax” Time Again!

Hello to all our WFCU Members! It’s tax season again…and we don’t need to remind you how stressful this time of year can be. We wanted to offer a few helpful insights that may help guide you through the 2018 tax season. We know that many of you are expecting a tax refund this year, and we also know that a great deal of you may have already decided on several different ways to spend that refund money. But before you decide on that shiny new car or that vacation to the Bahamas, the money you receive from your tax return could also be used to improve your financial health! Sometimes the best option is simply putting away some of that money into your WFCU savings account or a Certificate of Deposit, where you can earn interest on your balance each month and help protect yourself from unexpected expenses. Just think if your furnace decides to kick the bucket you won’t have to borrow money to replace it! You could also take some of that money and pay down some of your credit cards (especially those ones with the highest interest rates). One other great option may be to put that money into an IRA (Individual Retirement Account), which is a great way to save for the future and for your retirement! Our friendly staff at WFCU would be happy to assist you or answer any questions you may have on these things! If you’ve decided to use your money on one of the other fun options above thats okay too! We know everyone’s situation is different and sometimes getting your new...

PitchYpsi Was A Great Success!

WFCU had an awesome time yesterday evening at PitchYpsi hearing from a number of incredible local startups looking to bring additional value to our community! We are very excited and proud to have been able to help support this great cause and to continue showing support for Ypsilanti’s entrepreneurship community. Washtenaw Federal Credit Union would like to thank the many organizations that helped support this event and also the many volunteers who worked diligently to put this together! The collaboration we saw was incredible – folks from SPARK East, EMU, WCC, the City of Ypsilanti, Growing Hope and a number of other organizations that all helped contribute to making PitchYpsi a success. We also want to thank the community leaders that helped narrow the pool of PitchYpsi applications (which was certainly not an easy task) and also the five judges that agreed to volunteer for an equally difficult role – selecting last night’s winner of the $5,000 grand prize. We’d like to give a special shout out to our very own CEO Jason Matley, who served as one of the five judges last night! After hearing a pitch from five different startups and much deliberation the judges decided to award the grand prize money to Solartonic, a startup company creating innovative and unique solar equipment right here in Ypsilanti! Solartonic hopes to use the money to pilot a unique solar creation somewhere in the City of Ypsilanti for all residents to enjoy! Again, we also want to thank all the startups that participated in PitchYpsi last night and that submitted an application for the organization to see! We enjoyed...

Exciting News! WFCU Members will be receiving NEW EMV Debit/ATM CHIP Cards!

Hello WFCU Members! We have some exciting news to share with you – over the next couple of weeks we will be upgrading your debit cards! All WFCU members that currently have Debit/ATM cards will be receiving a new WFCU EMV Chip Card that will also feature a brand new design on the front, which you can see a sneak peek of below! Why are we doing this? In addition to the exciting new design and the fact that we are seeing more and more merchants using chip-activated terminals at their registers every day, your security is always a top priority of ours! Your new chip enabled card will provide you with greater security as well as additional protection against fraudulent activity. Your new card, just like your current card, can be used anywhere VISA debit cards are accepted! Simply swipe your card as you do now or insert your card and follow the prompts if a chip-activated terminal is available. When you use your new card this way the embedded chip generates a one-time use code, which is virtually impossible to counterfeit and helps reduce in-store fraud. What else should you know? We have a few other very important things to share that will help ensure this conversion goes as smoothly as possible. First, all WFCU members with a current Debit/ATM card will be issued a new card starting October 16, 2017. These Debit/ATM cards will have a new card number and new PIN number that are different from your existing card. Your new card and PIN number will arrive separately so please pay close attention to your...

Special Alert: Information on the recent Equifax Breach

As many of you have heard, Equifax (one of the three major credit bureaus used to check your credit) has recently released information on a breach they experienced that may impact more than one hundred million Americans (as they have released). We want to pass along some information to our members that may help mitigate risk – we are still currently trying to assess the scope of this situation and awaiting more information but we received some information from Ann Davidson, who is the VP of Risk Consulting at Allied Solutions, and it is below: “On September 7 it was announced that Equifax® was attacked by a cybersecurity breach that resulted in the exposure of an estimated 143 million consumers’ private information, not including those impacted in the UK and Canada. The data stolen in this horrific attack includes consumers’ names, SSNs, birth dates, addresses and driver’s license numbers, as well as 209,000 stolen card numbers and private data from 182,000 stolen dispute documents.” Below are some risk mitigation recommendations that Allied Solutions recommended we share:   “Closely monitor all credit accounts and loans, to catch and report any suspicious activity on any one of those accounts. Immediately report any suspicious credit or loan account activity – no matter how remote the suspicion – to the financial institution and/or lending institution. Sign up for the fraud alerting services offered by the three credit bureaus to to receive notifcations about potentially fraudulent activity: Equifax TransUnion Experian Sign up for free credit monitoring services, to monitor and report unauthorized activity. Place a freezeon all three credit bureau accounts to prevent fraudsters...

WFCU Launches New ‘SUPER SAVER’ Mobile Application!

It’s Spring time and Washtenaw Federal Credit Union has now officially launched its third mobile application! We have partnered with HT Mobile Apps out of Dexter, Michigan, to launch ‘WFCU $uper $aver’ – a completely free application that teaches important financial concepts to children and families in our community! WFCU $uper $aver is available to anyone who wants to learn about financial concepts and have fun while doing it (members and future members)! It can be downloaded from the Apple App Store, the Google Play Store, or the Amazon App Store by searching “WFCU” or “Washtenaw Federal Credit Union” and will always be free. It is our hope that this new mobile application will serve as an important resource to our community by helping youngsters learn about important financial concepts (through fun and engaging games and other creative means). Although at this time WFCU $uper $aver does not link directly your account at Washtenaw Federal Credit Union or at other financial institutions, it still does a great job teaching about saving and tracking your money, teaching budgeting concepts, and even teaching about our currency and its value. Please download our app and give it a try! Let us know what you think and if you find it helpful! You can email your feedback to Dan at dpawlak@washtenawfcu.org Our goal as a credit union is to help strengthen our community and we are happy to help one child (and one mobile app) at a time! Thank you to our members and our community for your continued support! We have also included a link to our YouTube video below that helps...
